Facts about Gun Rights:
- Over 50% of American households own guns. Among the 15 states with the highest homicide rates, 10 have restrictive or very restrictive gun laws.
- Beginning in Florida in 1987, there has been an increasing number of states that have enacted a “permit to carry” system. Over 30 states now have a “shall issue” permit system for firearms. Gun carrying laws in Vermont allow individuals to carry a concealed weapon without a permit.
- Minnesota’s gun rights statute gives a person the right to carry a pistol in public places with a “permit to carry” license. Exceptions to the individual right to carry a firearm in public include public places that post signs prohibiting weapons from entering their location.
- In a November 14, 2006 ruling in Hennepin County District Court, a judge found that churches have the right to completely ban firearms from all church property including parking lots and the area outside of the church building.
